The classic phrase in Tahiti is “There is only one  road!”, when asking for directions from the very  friendly locals. There are many businesses  scattered around the island as one drives the  main road that hugs the beautiful shoreline.  The  center of the island is relatively uninhabited, as it  is characterized by rough terrain and relatively  few access roads. Our GPS didn’t include Tahiti,  so when we went astay, we relied on the  graciousness of the residents, which was  abundant and without expectation of reward.

The City

Papeete, Tahiti’s capital city, is located in the Northwest sector of the island. It is a bustling metropolis somewhat out of character relative to the peaceful serenity of the majority of the remainder of the island. Services are plentiful in Papeete, with a wide variety of restaurants, services, and the annual celebration, Heiva which takes place each July. We had the privilege of attending Heiva and will share some images on this site.

French Polynesia

Tahiti is one of 118 islands that define French Poynesia, but is also used as a synonym to the entire island group. Tahiti is the halfway point between Los Angeles and Sydney Australia, situated south of the Equator at approximately the same longitude as Hawaii.
